How to Jump-Start a Car

Car Battery with Tools

For every car enthusiast and everyday Englewood driver, there comes a moment of dread when the ignition turns, but the engine doesn’t roar to life. The usual suspect? A dead jump start car battery. But don’t fret! At Kia of Port Charlotte, we’re here to guide you on the proper way to jump-start a car. Let’s dive into how to properly jump-start a car and get you back on the North Port road quickly.

Understand Why Your Car Won’t Jump Start

First, it’s crucial to understand the reasons why your car won’t jump-start:

  • Battery is old or has corroded terminals
  • Leaving lights or electronics on without the engine running
  • Alternator issues
  • Cold Venice weather affecting battery performance

If you’re sure the battery is the issue and your car won’t jump start, it’s time to get to the solution.

The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car: Step-by-Step

Before you begin, make sure both cars are off. Always wear safety gloves and glasses. Both cars should be close enough so the jumper cables can reach but not touch each other.

  1. First, connect the cables. To do this, connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
  2. Attach the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.
  3. Connect one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.
  4. Finally, attach the last black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery, away from the battery itself.
  5. Allow the car to run for a few minutes. This helps charge the dead battery.
  6. If your car starts, let it run to help charge the battery further. If your car doesn’t jump start after a few attempts, it may be time for a new battery or further professional assistance.
  7. Then, disconnect the cables. This should be done in the reverse order of connecting them. Start with the black clamp on the grounded metal part and finish with the red clamp on the positive terminal of the dead battery.
