How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Checking oil level on dipstick

Checking your transmission fluid on a regular basis is a key aspect of preventative maintenance. The transmission propels your vehicle forward onto Englewood roads so it’s important to stay up-to-date on routine maintenance. To learn how to check your transmission fluid, read the guide below from the team at Kia of Port Charlotte. If you still have questions, feel free to explore our other auto maintenance guides or connect with our team!

Step-by-Step Guide to Checking Transmission Fluid

Here’s how to check your transmission fluid:

  1. Turn the engine on for a few minutes before proceeding (the engine should be warmed up before you begin). Make sure your car is in park before getting out and opening the hood.
  2. Find the transmission fluid dipstick. Front-wheel-drive cars usually have it located to the right of the oil dipstick. Check your owner’s manual if you’re having trouble finding it.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid, moving it around between your thumb and forefinger. The fluid should be nearly clear, with a pink hue. If it looks dirty or gives off a burnt smell, it’s time for new transmission fluid.
  4. Use a rag to wipe off the dipstick. Then insert it back into the vehicle. Pull it out again and check the level. If the fluid reached a point under the “Full” marking, you’ll need to add more.
  5. Use a funnel to bring the fluid level up to the right spot. Be sure not to overfill it.

Sealed Transmissions

If you can’t find the dipstick anywhere, you may have a sealed transmission. This is the case for many newer vehicles, and it means you’ll have to bring your vehicle to a service center. A good time to do this is during other routine maintenance checks.

If you notice any strange noises as you change gears, the gears hesitating before changing, or a delay during accelerating, then it may be time to have your transmission fluid checked.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

It’s a good idea to check your transmission, power steering, and engine oil fluids every month. Get the specifics of your Kia routine maintenance schedule from your owner’s manual or in Port Charlotte. Meantime, here are some of the basics to know about your transmission fluid:

  • There are different types of transmission fluids for more recent models, manual transmissions, and automatic transmissions.
  • Checking the fluid on a manual transmission will usually require a jack to access a plug located beneath the car. For most drivers, a visit to our service center in Port Charlotte is more convenient.
  • If your vehicle hesitates before shifting gears, it might be due to low transmission fluid. However, it could be a sign of a more serious problem. Check the fluid level first, but if it’s fine, schedule service with us today.
  • You’ll want to replace your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. The actual amount depends on your driving habits, type of transmission, and other factors. Check your owner’s manual for a more specific replacement interval.
