Are All Electric Car Chargers the Same?

Charging Stations

Are all electric car chargers the same? If you’re getting ready to purchase a Kia EV6 or Optima Plug-in Hybrid, you might be wondering this very question. In short, all electric car chargers are universal – with the exception of the Tesla Supercharger. However, there are three different types of electric car chargers: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Find out how the three differ in terms of charging speed and voltage, and then shop our hybrid and electric models at Kia of Port Charlotte

What Are the Different Types of Electric Car Chargers?

As you travel through Englewood, you might see different types of electric car chargers at public stations. So, what makes a Level 2 different than a Level 3? Let’s break down the key differences:

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 chargers have a charging speed of 3 to 5 miles per hour. This is the slowest of the options, but it’s also the most accessible. Just plug your vehicle into any 120-volt household outlet to start charging in seconds. It’s generally a less practical option for everyday EV charging, but Level 1 is a great choice for a plug-in hybrid. PHEV models have much smaller batteries, so you can charge your battery from red to green in just a few hours. Meanwhile, an EV will take days to do the same.

Level 2 Charging

Level 2 charging can add anywhere from 12 to 80 miles to your EV per hour. This is the most common option for most EV drivers in North Port. Not only are Level 2 chargers found in public charging stations around Venice, but you can even set up your own at-home charger in your garage. At-home Level 2 stations are great for overnight charging, so your car is ready to go when you wake up.

Level 3 Charging

Level 3 charging is the fastest of them all, with a charging speed of 3 to 20 miles per minute. Why are they so quick? Level 3 chargers utilize a direct current, whereas Level 1 and Level 2 chargers use an alternating current. This is why Level 3 chargers are usually connected to a commercial space. Residential facilities generally don’t offer the necessary voltage required to power a Level 3 unit. So if you’re running low on battery while out and about, consider looking for a fast charger to save time!
